Why do people keep saying that Shawn Marion is underrated?

He is a Four time All-Star, he has been named to the All NBA 3rd Team for two years in a row (that means that he's considered to be one of the top 11 to 15 players in the NBA), he's the highest paid player on the team and he's played for two USA National teams! Not bad for a guy who can't create his own shot, has no handle and averages two assists per game on the highest scoring team in the league. Offensively, he is the 4th option on his own team. By the way, just because he guards 5 positions, doesn't mean he's a great defensive player. It means that the Suns don't play good one-on-one defense. He is a unique talent and he gets all the credit that he deserves.

The main reason why he is so under-rated is because of his style of play. The way he gets his points are usually off an offensive rebound or on the fast break. If you notice the sun's offense, there are no plays run specifically for marion. The sun's set plays involve pretty much a pick and roll (nash/amare), a pick and pop (nash/thomas), or an off-ball screen for a quick 3 point hit (raja bell/james jones). There are however some rare hi-low plays involving diaw/marion. Marion usually gets all of his points on ally-oops or on the fast break. He does avg over a 1 3pt a game, and does drive in for some floaters at times. The truth is, he does not really create for his own shot. He does not play like Kobe/Lebron/T-mac. Don't get me wrong, he is probably the most well-rounded player that produces in every category, but the way he plays simply does not jump out. Plus the Suns have 2 time MVP Steve Nash and All Star Amare Stoudamire who get all the publicity. I love Marion and I hope that one day people will recognize him more and rate him according to his stats, but as it stands now, unless the suns start running some isolation/post up plays for him, he is more of a finisher than a Superstar.

He is a bonifide all-star but gets very little recognition oustide of the Suns fanbase. Ask anyone else to name people on the Suns and he will be the 3rd or 4th name that gets named, if he were on a team like the Grizzlies he would be the biggest thing going. If he wasnt on the most prolific offense in the NBA he would get way more recognition that is all.

I've never heard anyone say an unkind word about the guy. Never heard anyone say that he is underrated or overrated. Just heard them say this guy is freakin sweet
That's because he's done all the things you said and he still doesn't get all the publicaty that the other players in the league do. If you every asked someone who knows a little about the nba they wouldn't know who he is. they probably would just know kobe or shaq.
